Eco-Friendly, Natural Hand Soap

Have you ever read the list of ingredients on your hand soap label?

Whether liquid or bar soap, there is a multitude of unpronounceable ingredients, many of which originate from the petrochemical industry, raising many concerns about their toxicity. Some antibacterial agents, like triclosan, a very toxic compound, may also be added.
Did you know you can make eco-friendly and natural soap cheaply and easily?

It requires minimal effort and little equipment. You don't even need to buy mould. you can use any container for that.

Recipe (700 g):

500 g Organic (SLS-free) Soap base (to make soap bars)
or 500 ml castille soap (for liquid soaps)
90 organic shea butter
12 ml organic essential oils
2 tbsp organic Celtic (grey sea) rock salt
2 tbsp organic sugar (optional)
1 tbsp organic seaweed (powdered)
1 tbsp organic activated coconut charcoal

Method:

  • To make soap bars, melt the soap base gently over a bain-marie.

  • Add the shea butter and mix well with a silicon spatula once melted.

  • Add the salt and sugar, and stir well until the mix resembles the consistency of smooth mashed potato. The sugar helps link the molecules together, making a harder soap. This is not necessary if you make liquid soap.

  • Pour half of the soap into a mould. To the other half, add the remaining ingredients and stir until well combined. Pour the mix into the mould.

  • Leave to cool overnight. Cut to size if using a larger mould or unmould for shaped soaps.

  • If you make liquid soap, combine all ingredients and pour the mix into a bottle.
